What you were not told and painful experiences

In fact, we thought to deal with the sensitive technical issues to be considered in sportswear, which we will talk about now, in great detail. However, we've decided to take up just the outlines.

Fitness clothing is a broad term that covers clothing worn during physical activity, including but not limited to exercise, running, yoga, pilates, cross training, and team sports. Although the type of gym wear varies according to the sport or the technical strength required by the activity, there are certain elements that are common to all fitness clothes.

We can explain this issue by giving an extremely precise technical example : Let's say you want to place a wholesale order for the perfect fitness leggings. And again, let's assume that you have determined your leggings fabric as the most widely used Polyester fabric (Or Polyamide fabric Leggings).. What activity are you planning to use this leggings for? So for yoga practice or for jogging on the street?. Yoga and Running powders are actually very different products. But of course, the same material and manufacturing system are generally used in the market for both. And you can find these ordinary clothing items in many places. This is exactly what global fitness clothing brands pay attention to. As you will see in these two examples we mentioned, different leggings produced using different materials and sewing techniques to be used for different purposes. You should make a statement for leggings that will make a difference to your customers and that you can proudly sell. Because this is exactly what will make you stand out from other fitness clothing retailer brands.

The most common mistakes Startup Fitness clothing brands make

We have been in the sportswear industry for over 35 years.  Without a doubt, the most common mistake we see sportswear brands make is falling into the cheap price trap. 

What is a low price trap?

There is no shortcut to producing quality fitness apparel.

Although the low price trap, in which sportswear manufacturers drop sportswear brands, is a very broad technical subject, let's explain it in the simplest sense. Low quality materials and workmanship are used in all stages of production in order to produce any clothing such as t-shirts, hoodies, leggings, varsity jackets at low prices.  For ease of understanding, we find it more appropriate to explain in items.

Perhaps the one important thing a sportswear brand should never forget is this. A manufacturer who offers a low price by sacrificing quality sportswear must somehow compensate for this cost. 

1 ) Fraud in the fabric you prefer for fitness clothing: For example, you have requested nylon (polyamide) fabric to be used for your leggings design. Fabric production quality is an extremely complex issue. In order to reduce the cost, they will undoubtedly keep the quality of the nylon fabric you prefer in the production of leggings low. So how can they do this? 

The other issue as important as which fabric is used in the manufacture of clothes is how the fabric is produced. In other words, we can say that it is not important which fabric you use, but how that fabric is produced. Firstly, they keep the weight of the nylon fabric to be used in the production of leggings low.  When you take the fabric in your hand, you may be under the misconception that it is thick. However, with a simple trick in the knitting technique of the fabric, you can actually think that a light fabric is heavy.  For example, they use a fabric weighing 200-220 grams instead of 240 grams in nylon (or polyester) gaiter fabric. A difference of 20-40 grams has a much greater negative impact than you might think.

2 ) There are some basic finishing processes that are essential for the fabric to be of high quality. However, in order to be able to produce and offer cheap and low priced fitness apparel, they use fabric that has not been colour fastness finished. As a result, the colour of the fabric will fade in the first wash. In addition, the print applied on the fabric will separate from the fabric surface. Your leggings design will shrink by one size in the first wash.

3) Elastane ratio fraud, which is very important in fitness clothing such as leggings and sports bras and determines the elasticity/stretch ratio. This is one of the most common types of fraud we see. For example, the elastane ratio of the nylon fabric used to make leggings is labelled as 20%, but unfortunately the actual elastane ratio can be as low as 10%.

4) Here is another low price trap that we see very often. This cheap price trap is called sewing technique fraud. In the production of high-quality sportswear, many components such as stitch type, stitch spacing, thread tension and thread type are specially designed after analysis of the design. However, in order to be able to offer low prices, many sportswear manufacturers do not (cannot) give importance to this important technical issue. In order to keep the price low, they must somehow compensate by sacrificing quality. Even close stitch spacing is one of the most common low-price traps used to reduce costs. Naturally, leggings or sports bras made in this way will burst their seams after only a short period of use. 

5 ) Let's give an example of the low price trap often used in sportswear with another basic garment, the t-shirt. In cheap products (promotional, disposable type), the main fabric of the product (its own fabric) is used in t-shirts and sweatshirt collars. Special rib fabric is used in quality products (the prices we give you are accordingly). In addition, many components such as stitch type, stitch spacing, thread tension, thread type are specially designed in quality products.

6) Another trick used to offer low-priced fitness clothing is the low quality used in brand logo printing and pattern printing.  Again, let's give a low price trap from the production of leggings or sports bras (also valid for the production of basic sportswear such as t-shirts and hoodies). For example, you wanted to use the transfer (heat transfer press) printing technique for your brand logo printing. In order to offer a cheap price, the manufacturer will first use cheap-poor quality materials in the transfer printing material. It will also reduce the printing time to save electricity. The result is brand logos that come off after a few washes in the washing machine. Additionally, since the brand logo material will be of poor quality, its color will fade quickly.

How to find the best perfect solution in fitness wear manufacturing

In order to produce a perfect leggings for hard sports and activities where high stretching is essential, first of all, it is necessary to determine the polyester fabric and the spandex ratio in the fabric perfectly in order to maximize the stretch. Well, all the instruments have been flawlessly completed so far. Polyester fabric with high spandex ratio was prepared. Other problems will arise if the fabric weight is not well adjusted when the Spandex ratio in the fabric is high to maximize stretch. For leggings with high stretching ability, it is necessary to use special and high quality yarn that can withstand this stretch and is very durable. In addition, the yarn used must be flexible enough to withstand this stretching rate. Undoubtedly, a perfect fitness wear product with all these technical features must use a high quality fabric that has been finished with color fixation and finishing. At this point, a completely different and very different problem arises. Not every manufacturer can sew a fabric with these technical specifications. Because this sewing technique can be performed by master stitchers with high experience. 

Of course, the elements we mentioned above and required to produce a quality fitness wear are also valid for other sportswear products. (such as T-shirt, Sports bra, Hoodie, Vegan leather jacket). All elements such as the type of fabric, sewing technique and printing system that should be used in the clothing product to be produced perfectly should be used in the best way. These are the most basic features that distinguish cheap and therefore poor quality clothing products from high quality clothing products in the market.

The brand logo printing technology used in sportswear is also an issue that needs attention. For example, printing inks that contain toxic chemicals, which are often preferred because of their cheapness, will actually cause serious damage to your fitness clothing brand. At first, your brand logo, which was printed with cheap and poor quality ink, will begin to separate from the fabric after the first wash and its color will fade quickly.
